Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

2009 Review and Into 2010

Happy Holidays, and looking forward to a very active and healthy New Year for all of us.
The Ligonier Township Recreation Board, with Ligonier Borough, and the Friends of the Ligonier Valley Trail have been patiently waiting for news of state grant funding for Phase Two of the trail project. We look forward to good news in 2010.As a reminder, the grant application is for a Feasibility Study of a trail that will encompass much of the Borough and Township. The Recreation Board has been preparing specifications for grading the rail bed of Phase One, but minor changes will require a little more time for review. Our efforts have been toward making best use of a small budget, and provide an excellent surface that will last a good many years.
Black Bridge circa 1980
The bridge abutments have been further reviewed by the DEP and the Westmoreland Conservation District. Hadi Emdad, DEP; Paul Fry, Ligonier Borough; Bob Gangawere, VP, Recreation Board; and Jim Pillsbury, PE, WCD, studying abutments and ramp area
Design of the bridge and the ramp must take into consideration their effects on future flooding. Old maps, photographs and historical materials have been collected and considered in this study. We have received help from the Borough and the Ligonier Valley Rail Road Association.
With the help of Schwinn, Indiana Schwinn Cycling and Fitness Center, Jackie's House, Speedgoat, and many volunteers, we ran a successful membership drive to form the Friends of the Ligonier Valley Trail. That drive also netted $870.00 membership dollars that will be used for future projects. The Ligonier Township Recreation Board, with the Ligonier Country Market, purchased a bike rack for the Farmers Market biking customers.

In all, the Ligonier Valley Trail garnered ample awareness from the community, and the community responded positively. We appreciate all the encouragement and assistance from all the neighbors and volunteers. This is a volunteer driven project, and we look forward to new Friends and good neighbors in the New Year.

Happy Trails!
